WARSAW — During the Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 7, Fire Chief Michael Wilson announced that Warsaw has been chosen as one of three locations in Indiana to host the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Leadership Seminar.

The seminar will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18 at the Kosciusko County Justice Building in the basement conference room. The seminar will allow fire chiefs from all over Indiana to learn about the services available through the State Fire Marshal and Indiana Department of Homeland Security. Topics covered will include investigation support, training, disaster response and emergency medical services certificates.

The seminar was held previous years in Fort Wayne but was transitioned to Warsaw this year. Wilson expects that the conference room will be full of chiefs from many different departments.

Interested individuals must register online to ensure adequate seating.

An update on Station 13-3 was also given at the meeting. The Design and Construction Committee recently met with architects to review two different building plans. The architects are working on finalizing these plans and will provide the committee with estimated costs for the plans in the next couple weeks. The board will then look at what plan they can afford with the budget proposed.

Wilson gave an update on December 2016’s response report and the 2016 year in review.

In December 2016, the department had 257 responses. Just over five percent of these responses were true fire calls. The majority of responses, 64.3 percent, were medical assists.

In 2015, the department responded to 1,593 runs. This number grew to 2,335 runs for 2016. Out of those calls, 125 were for fires and 1,662 were for rescues and medical assists. Eighty percent of runs were within city limits while 17 percent were in Wayne Township.

In other news:

  • Board member Mike Klondaris ran the meeting as Mayor Joseph Thallemer was unable to attend.
  • The December monthly expenditure report was presented and approved.
  • Five different travel requests were approved for various conferences and meetings for the upcoming year.
