Moisture problems have caused severe problems at Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory Station 1.
Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory Station 1 will be getting some much needed repairs thanks to a vote by the Warsaw Board of Works and Public Safety.
Station 1, located on Main Street in downtown Warsaw, is in need of a new roof and new exterior siding – repairs that are expected to cost at least $84,650. Fire chief Mike Brubaker supplied the B.O.W. with photos of the conditions of the building and said there are additional concerns of structural deficiencies, especially if the conditions are not repaired soon.
“It’s not a design issue, it’s just that it’s gone on too long,” Brubaker said about the lack of repairs. “This needed to be done about 10 years ago.”
The problems with the roof began when old heaters were removed from the building but the stacks remained. Those stacks, according to Brubaker, began to leak water, which resulted in the damages.
Robinson Construction provided the estimates to repair the roof and the exterior metal siding. Roofing repairs alone are estimated at $34,700. Replacing the siding, which is rusted at the base, and insulation, is estimated at $49,950.
In addressing the problems, Brubaker made it clear to the governing board that the estimates do not account for any additional damages that may exist but be unseen. “As they begin peeling away the siding they may find more structural damage,” he cautioned, noting the quote for the siding does not include any repairs to steel beams that may be necessary.
B.O.W. members Charlie Smith and Warsaw Mayor Joe Thallemer, in the absence of member Jeff Grose, voted to approve the repairs and instructed Brubaker to notify the board as or if additional problems are located.
In other business:
- A professional services agreement was signed with Anchor Consulting LLC. The business, located in Alexandria, Va., will work with the city on consulting and lobbying for projects that could qualify for federal funding. The total contract is for $40,000 – payable in 7 quarterly installments – and runs through October 2014. There is a 30-day exit clause in the event the city does not see results in the form of grants.
- The city hall plaza project to construct a wall and restroom facilities was awarded to D-T Construction Services Inc. for a sum of $160,716.
- Hal Heagy, sexton of Oakwood Cemetery, was given the go ahead to purchase a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado 3/4 ton truck from Lakeside Chevrolet for a total of $25,619.56. The money will come from the cemetery’s equipment fund.
