Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory was called at 7:06 a.m. this morning to the scene of an attic fire at 614 W. Market St., Warsaw.

Firefighters arriving at the single family residence observed light smoke coming from the roofline of the home. Winona Lake was called for an engine assist and Leesburg Fire Department was called for manpower assist. Fire units staged on Market Street, closing the street from Union Street to Hand Avenue for about two hours. The fire was brought under control at 7:56 a.m.

WWFT Chief Mike Brubaker said all five occupants of the home, owned by Jerry and Debra Miller, escaped unharmed. And, despite the bitter temperatures, no firefighters suffered exposure or any injuries while battling the fire.

Brubaker said when firefighters arrived at the residence, they found fire spreading through the attic and walls. Minor damage was reported to the kitchen, but significant damage to the attic area. Total damages are estimated at $22,000.

Squad 70 Investigator Gordon Baker was called to the scene to determine a cause for the fire. Brubaker said that, while the cause has not yet been pinpointed, it is not suspicious.

Due to the subzero temperatures, firefighters dealt with frozen hydrants and relied heavily on tankers to battle the fire. Officials from Indiana-American Water did respond to assist with the hydrants.

The Red Cross was called to provide a canteen for the firefighters and assistance to the five occupants of the home.

Also assisting on scene was Multi-Township EMS.
